WHY IS BIODIVERSITY IMPORTANT?

Biodiversity is important for multiple reasons. It allows different species and landscapes to work together and have a multifunctional purpose. Biodiversity in plants allows for a wide array of different species with different dietary needs coexist in the same place; additionally, it allows for a variety in diet. It can ensure that life can be sustained by many forms and that the products and services provided by the environment won't be depleted. It can also ensure safety against unpredictable disasters. For example, a disease that affects one species could be devastating if only that species was in existence, where as a disease that kills spinach may not affect any other plant, ensuring that humans and animals can still survive.

Locally and regionally

Local and regional biodiversity is important because specialized ecosystems and habitats are necessary to sustain certain types of life. A bird can't live in the ocean just like a fish couldn't live on land. Many species go extinct when they can no longer continue to adapt to their changing environments so it is important that biodiversity is different among local and regional areas. The biodiversity of a city cannot provide a safe habitat for wildlife, so they live in a separate, but still local, ecosystem that provides services that can sustain their life.

Nationally and internationally

The importance of biodiversity nationally and internationally is the same, but at a larger and less specialized scale. Agriculturally speaking, all food requires its own specific climate to grow in. Much of the food imported in to countries is food that it's landscapes and climate cannot accommodate. There are habitats that some species flourish in and others they haven't been seen in in thousands of years.
